Lewis Carroll's famous story of Alice and her adventures after falling down a rabbit hole. Following a white rabbit, she meets such strange creatures as a talking doorknob, who helps her through a keyhole into Wonderland; Tweedledum and Tweedledee, who tell the story of "The Walrus and the Carpenter"; the Caterpillar; and theMad Hatter and the March Hare, who celebrate an unbirthday at their tea party. The whole story becomes such a
nightmare that Alice awakens from her dream to the recitations of her sister and the purring of her cat, Dinah.
This animated feature had been on Walt's mind since 1933, when he considered a live-action version starring Mary Pickford. He shelved the project after Paramount made a version, but later had artist David Hall, a Hollywood artist and designer, create some concepts for an all-animated film. WorldWar II intervened, and it was not until the late 1940s that work began again in earnest. One of Walt's big problems with this film was that here he was dealing with a highly regarded classic, and what was charming and appropriately bizarre in book formseemed oddly out of place on the motion picture screen. Walt's feeling, expressed in later years, was that "Alice" had no "heart."

Die Geschichte von Alice und ihren Abenteuern nach dem Fall in ein Hasenloch ist sehr bekannt und wurde vom Schriftsteller Luis Caroll geschrieben. Indem Alice ein weißes Kaninchen verfolgt, trifft sie auf komische Wesen, wie einen Türgriff, der spricht und der ihr dabei hilft durch ein Schlüsselloch in das Wunderland zu schlüpfen. Da lernt sie Tweedle - Dee und Tweedle - Dam kennen, die Geschichte ”Der Holzfäller” erzählen, den Katerpilar, den verrückten Hut und den Maulwurf, die den nicht wirklichen Geburtstag mit einer Teeparty feiern. Walt Disney spielte mit dem Gedanken dieses Zeichentrickfilms schon seit 1933, als er an eine Verfilmung mit viel Abenteuer und mit der Hauptdarstellerin Mari Pickford dachte. Er startete den Versuch, als Parramount eine ähnliche Version veröffentlichte, aber später hat er den Künstler und Zeichner aus Hollywood, David Hall hinzu gezogen um einige Ideen für einen abgeschlossenen Zeichentrickfilm zu kreieren. Der Zweite Weltkrieg ist dazwischen gekommen und Ende der 40ger Jahre begannen wieder die Dreharbeiten. Das größte Problem Walts in diesem Film war, dass es sich um ein klassisches Meisterwerk handelte, und sowohl der ganze Charm als auch die Fantasie der schriftlichen Version, schienen ihm bei der Verfilmung unreell. Die Gefühle Walts für diesen Film wurden viele Jahre später mit dem Spruch ”Alice hatte keine Seele” ausgedrückt.
